The Abbot’s Thrift supports worthy causes throughout the community. We offer support through the provision of goods and supplies as well as monetary donations. Here are some of the groups in our area that we help.
Valley Churches United
From the VCUM website:
Valley Churches United Missions (VCUM) is a grassroots organization. It was originated under the name St. Andrews Outreach during the torrential valley rains, flooding and Love Creek slide of 1982…. In 1987, a coalition of county government and community organizations was formed to establish the original Valley Resource Center, a permanent food pantry….
Now almost 30 years after the 1982 disaster Valley Churches United Missions continues its “Missions of Love” in its permanent site in Ben Lomond. The mission has raised and distributed eleven million dollars in assistance. Valley Churches United Mission’s programs reach out to over 400 families each month. The mission provides emergency food, crisis rent, utilities, medical, school supplies and disaster relief. The 2005 Valley Christmas Project touched 11,095 lives in Santa Cruz County. The Mission operates 99% with volunteers.
St. Lawrence Academy
From the St. Lawrence Academy website:
St. Lawrence Academy is a nonprofit Orthodox Christian parochial school. We are located in downtown Felton, five minutes from Scotts Valley, CA in Santa Cruz County. Our school was founded in 1990 in Ben Lomond, under the name Saints Peter & Paul Academy. The school began teaching grades six and seven and over the years has been able to expand and offer a full curriculum for grades K-8. We offer small classes where teachers can give attention to every student, and we welcome all who can subscribe to our mission statement.
